Date: February.17 2007 DEM: 07-ES-003 Location: Rattlesnake Ridge, near North Bend Mission : Search for human remains Approximately 18 searchers plus SAR Coordinator, Kathy, and a Detective took part in this search for bones, clothing or other evidence associated with a partial human skull recently discovered by a hiker. The terrain was at about a 45 degree slope once the initial descending trail was left and required clambering over very large downed logs, around bushes and through many sticker bushes. The hiker had left the well used Rattlesnake Trail near North Bend and headed "cross country", downhill, in a steep area of fallen, rotting old growth trees and large live trees. He discovered the skull resting on one of the old growth logs: it could have rolled downhill or been moved by animals. It showed signs of having been chewed.Searchers established a base line a few hundred feet below where the skull had been found and worked up to and beyond where the skull had been found. Later in the day, searchers relocated to a drainage area. There were several theories determining the area to be searched. 1) the body might be uphill if the skull rolled downhill and come to rest on a ledge formed by a fallen tree, 2) the skull might have been transported across the hill by an animal, and 3) other bones might be down slope of the skull. These scenarios meant a very large search area had to be checked. With the exception of an animal bone, found by Mary of 4x4, no evidence was found. Mary's find, however, interjected new hope and energy into a crew that had begun to lose hope of finding anything. Although the search did not meet its objective of finding evidence to identify the subject, it was a good opportunity to forge strong bonds with other units and to work alongside Kathy. Of the 15 searchers raking for evidence, 8 were from ESAR, 2 from SMR, 3 from NWHSAR (myself, Ken, and Gretchen), 1 from SPART and 1 from Trackers. Seven search dogs and their handlers were present later in the day and Duffy from 4x4. Lunch was provided by Mama. Credit was given for Crime Scene.Barbara, NWHSAR OL
